Job Description

The University of California, Berkeley’s Intercollegiate Athletics program is seeking a Director of Graphic Design and Photography to shape the public face and recruiting narrative for Cal Women’s Basketball. This role blends graphic design, photography, and social storytelling to support branding and engagement across departments, driving compelling visuals for recruitment, marketing, and strategic communications. The position is onsite in Berkeley, reporting into the athletics team and collaborating closely with coaches, compliance, and marketing colleagues to ensure consistent, rule-compliant storytelling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead visual work for recruiting prospective student-athletes, crafting graphics and directing photoshoots that highlight achievements, values, and opportunities within Cal Women’s Basketball, while ensuring NCAA compliance in partnership with coaching staff and Intercollegiate Athletics Compliance.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Creative Video and across Cal Athletics departments (Marketing, Creative, Communications, Ticketing, etc.), oversee the visual design strategy for the program and develop intercollegiate athletics specific visual solutions to communications challenges that support operational and strategic goals.
  • Partner with Cal Athletics Marketing, Creative, Communications, and digital teams to plan and execute social media efforts, delivering stories and content designed to maximize reach, engagement, and impact for the program locally and globally; manage content and maintenance of social accounts, including community management, promotions, and analytics.
  • Analyze and implement revised standard operating procedures and guidelines for the area, maintaining brand identity and ensuring consistency in style, themes, and marketing approaches for all Women’s Basketball creative content.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including opportunities for professional development.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere Pro).
  • Strong grounding in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, branding, and visual storytelling.
  • Knowledge of digital photography techniques, lighting, composition, and photo editing workflows, with the ability to produce high-quality content for marketing, branding, social media, and event coverage.
  • Experience managing projects from concept to final production while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Understanding of social media content creation and platform-specific visual best practices; ability to maintain brand consistency across print, digital, web, and multimedia materials.
  • Experience preparing files for print production and digital publishing; attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Awareness of current design trends, photography styles, and emerging creative technologies; ability to work independently with sound judgment and initiative.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and directions.
  • Experience with motion graphics, video editing, and multimedia storytelling is preferred.
  • Knowledge of camera equipment, lenses, audio gear, and studio or on-location shooting environments.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed for events, games, or projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of program activity and best practices; strong listening skills and ability to multitask in a dynamic setting.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications relevant to job duties and strong communication skills in English.

Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics comprises more than 280 staff members and coaches and supports 30 varsity programs, serving over 850 student-athletes annually within the NCAA framework.

Salary & Benefits

Budgeted annual salary range: $82,800 - $85,000. This is a 100% full-time position (40 hours per week) eligible for full UC benefits. For a full description of the comprehensive benefits package, visit the University of California Compensation & Benefits site.

Other Information

  • This is not a visa opportunity; sponsorship for a new H-1B petition is not included.
  • The role will be governed by the terms of the Communications, Marketing, and Sales Professionals agreement, represented by the UAW.
